Itinerary:

Detailed Itinerary

  • Days 1 – Padang → Siberut Island → Mentawai Traditional Village

Activities:
- Gather at Muaro Padang Harbor at 06.20
- Depart by Mentawai Fast Boat at 07.00
- Cross to Siberut Island (±6 hours)
- Arrive at Muara Siberut Harbor and have lunch
- Continue the journey by private car (±2 hours)
- Continue the journey by motorized boat (pompong) along the Siberut River (±1 hour)
- Trekking (±1 hour) to the traditional house (Uma)
- Welcoming ceremony by Sikerei (Mentawai shaman/chieftain)
- Dinner & adaptation to the Mentawai forest environment

  • Day 2 – Adaptation & Introduction to Traditional Life

Activities:
- Breakfast with a local family
- Learn about daily village activities: picking taro and bananas, raising chickens, processing sago
- Learn about the philosophy of balance between humans, spirits, and nature
- Bathe in the river & enjoy the forest atmosphere
- Afternoon: Talking with Sikerei about traditions and spiritual life

  • Days 3 – Mentawai Traditional Activities

Activities:
- Breakfast with family
- Learn to make traditional clothing from tree bark (baiko)
- Participate in processing sago into food
- Watch the process of making traditional tattoos
- Cook sago on a wood stove (Mentawai staple food) with family
- Evening: listen to stories and legends of the Mentawai people

  • Day 4 – Mentawai Rituals & Spirituality

Activities:
- Breakfast with a local family
- Attend or observe a simple traditional ritual: purification of spirits, healing, or offerings
- Learn Mentawai prayers and ritual movements guided by a Sikerei (shaman)
- Take photos or videos (with community permission)
- Afternoon: Explore the surrounding area to learn about medicinal plants and sacred trees
- Evening: Enjoy traditional music and dance performed by a Sikerei (shaman)

  • Days 5 – Cultural Village & Waterfall Day Trip

Activities:
- Breakfast with a local family
- Jungle Trekking to the Waterfall
- Swimming & Natural Pool Relaxation
- Free Time – Swimming, Exploring & Rest
- Return to Uma in the afternoon, rest, and bathe in the river

  • Days 6 – Island Beach Camp Experience

Activities:
- Depart for a small island 
- Lunch at the boat pick-up point to the island
- Enjoying the sunset on the beach
- Dinner at camp & free activities 

  • Days 7 – Snorkel & Beach Play Trip

Activities:
- Breakfast at camp
- Snorkeling 
- Fishing in the sea
- Free to enjoy the beach atmosphere and at the same time bathe on the beach

  • Days 8 – Return to Muara Siberut → Padang

Activities:
- Breakfast at camp
- Farewell event with the community
- Boat route to Siberut harbor
- Lunch at Muara Siberut
- Afternoon: take the Mentawai Fast Ferry back to Padang
- Late afternoon arrival at Muaro Padang Harbor - End of program

IMPORTANT NOTES FOR VISITING THE MENTAWAI TRIBE

1. Preparation Before Departure

  • Location: Mentawai Islands, West Sumatra Province, Indonesia. The main access route is via Padang (Muaro Padang Port), then by ferry to Siberut Island.
  • Permits: Make sure you have permission to visit the traditional area (usually arranged by a local guide)
  • Local Guide: It is (mandatory to hire a local guide) to help with communication and to show respect for local custom

What to Bring:

  •  Personal medicine, mosquito repellent, raincoat, flashlight, toiletris, light clothing, and another personal needs.
  • Power bank and a waterproof camera the area is humid.

2. Etiquette and Manners in Traditional Areas

  • Greeting and Smiling: Greet locals with a warm smile; shake hands if they initiate it.
  • Photo Permission: Always ask for permission before taking photos of people, houses, or traditional activities.
  • Entering the Uma (Traditional House):
  1.  Remove your footwear before entering.
  2. Do not sit just anywhere—wait for the host to show you where to sit.
  • Conversation: Avoid speaking negatively about nature, animals, or their traditions.
  • Gifts/Souvenirs: If you wish to offer gifts, do so politely and modestly examples: candy, sugar, coffee, or cigarettes.

4. Dos & Don’ts

✔️ Recommended / Allowed:

  • Learn a few simple Mentawai words (for example: “Anai Leu Ita?” = "Hello, how are you?)
  • Participate in daily activities (with the guide’s permission).
  • Respect ongoing rituals—observe quietly unless invited to join.

✖️ Not Allowed:

  • Do not give money directly to children (give it through your guide if you wish to help).
  • Do not touch ritual tools or objects without permission.
  • Avoid criticizing their way of life or comparing it to city life.
  • Do not bring alcohol without the guide’s approval—it can be considered disrespectful.

5. Additional Notes

  • The weather in Mentawai is humid and often rainy; wear quick-dry clothing.
  • Phone signal is limited, especially in forest areas.
  • Electricity is limited, especially in traditional houses—bring a power bank.
  • Keep the environment clean; do not litter.
  • If you feel unwell, inform your guide immediately as medical facilities are limited.
